Tampa Kickball Pickup Game Deemed Successful

When American Idol contestant Keith London decided to begin a kickball league of his own, he had no idea how quickly it would grow.

Now in eleven cities with plans to expand into Ft Lauderdale in the coming months, America’s Finest Kickball Leauge has over 1,000 members with nearly 400 added just last month.

Saturday’s pickup game included seventy interested players, fifty of whom registered to play this coming season. “That’s a huge success,” says London. “With other leagues, you might get seventy out to a game and only ten of those might register. So fifty is a huge win!”

The crowd was also mixed, with women making up nearly 40% of the participants and men 60%. The racial and ethnic diversity was also apparent.

The group of seventy players was split into five teams and two rounds of games were played. Teams selected captains and names, which London said is the best part of the day. Team names include Ball Busters, Balls Deep, C-mon Iwanna Laya, Sit On My Face, and Tampa Bears.

London said that the league goal is to have eight teams of seventeen players each by the start of Tampa’s season opener on October 21, 2017, but the numbers aren’t a requirement.

Interested players can register until October 14th, at which time registration will close so London can order uniforms and equipment.

When asked who should join, London said, “it’s one of those everyone-type-of sports, so anyone!”

Since space is limited, London suggests that interested players sign up ASAP, because once the spaces fill, and they will, registration will close, even before October 14th.
