EARLY LGBT HOME MOVIES FEATURED IN LGBTQ FILM SERIES
The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, June 14 with REEL IN THE CLOSET, a documentary featuring “unearthed” LGBT home movies from past decades.
The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.
Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
About REEL IN THE CLOSET (2015): While the LGBTQ community began to experience greater visibility in the wake of 1969’s Stonewall riots, generations had quietly lived their lives before, out of the public eye. Filmmaker Stu Maddux reveals this hidden history by unearthing a treasure trove of rare home movies made by gay and lesbian people – some dating back to the 1930s – that have long languished in the backs of people’s closets. Projecting the viewer back in time, these private moments open a fascinating window into the surprising vibrancy of unheralded LGBT lives. (Not rated)
As part of our LGBTQ Pride Month celebration, our film in June will feature a guest speaker from the Tampa Bay International Gay and International Film Festival (TIGLFF) who will briefly talk about TIGLFF and introduce the film.
Save the date, Thursday July 12, for GIRLS LOST (Sweden: 2015). Three bullied teenage girls are going through the throes of finding themselves in this Swedish fantasy feature. In a dark world of teen violence, sexual confusion and marginalization, the girls have only each other. A seismic shift happens when they discover a curious plant in their greenhouse. It turns out to have mysterious magical qualities that, when consumed, transforms the girls temporarily into boys. But not only does their gender change, the world around them, and their response to it, is profoundly altered. (Not rated)
Upcoming films in the series include: CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (August 9), A FANTASTIC WOMAN (September 13), UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN (October 4) and GBF (November 8). Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
