Field Director

Position Description: Field Director
Reporting Line: Senior Political Director
Department: Field/Political
Location: Central Florida
Staff Tier Level: Director (of a Program)

Position Summary:
The Field Director is a regular, full-time position who reports to the Senior Political Director. The position is based in Florida with a preference for the markets of Orlando or Tampa Bay. This is a position with high expectation of travel.

The Field Field Director is responsible for developing and implementing Equality Florida’s field and mobilization activities in all 67 Florida counties. The Field Director works with the Senior Political Director to maintain and expand Equality Florida’s ability to mobilize grassroots advocacy on behalf of federal, state and local LGBTQ legislative priorities and will design and implement grassroots electoral and campaign strategies in support of candidates, and ballot initiatives, in the region. The Field Director will increase Equality Florida’s visibility and presence and support management and stewardship of critical partnerships and coalition relationships.

Position Responsibilities:
Specific duties of the position are as follows:

Electoral activities: Working with the Senior Political Director and other Equality Florida staff as needed, develop and implement electoral strategies to support pro-equality candidates, as well as provide assistance to Equality Florida-supported ballot initiative campaigns. Oversee development and implementation of strategic, multi-year plans in targeted counties for local, legislative or electoral campaigns. Manage Equality Florida’s voter file and election data infrastructure. Support Senior Political Director in managing election partner relationships, consultants and vendors.

Pride and Outreach Program: The Field Director will design and manage the Equality Florida annual pride program. Florida is home to one of the largest Pride calendars in the country with over 30 pride festivals held a year. The Field Director will ensure Equality Florida’s high visibility and presence at the state’s Pride events and will work to maximize opportunities to educate and engage our community and recruit new activists into our work. Additional outreach events, outside of the Pride calendar, are often targeted as well.

Federal, state, and local advocacy: Work with the Senior Policy Director and Senior Political Director to organize Equality Florida’s annual Lobby Days program and all in-district citizen lobbying programs. Develop and implement strategies and campaigns for supporting or opposing federal, state, and local legislation.

Volunteer grassroots support: Manage all work related to volunteer advocacy in the field. Ensure that state and local volunteer networks are vital and growing in support of Equality Florida’s goals. Develop methods to increase our grassroots network. Coordinate our activist boot camps which have a goal of training and mobilizing hundreds of volunteer advocates annually.

Small Business Outreach: Partner with other department leads and staff to support the growth of Equality Florida’s small business outreach programs.

Training: Oversee the design and implementation of training programs for Equality Florida members, volunteers and supporters.

Coalition work: Support the stewardship of strategic partnerships with state and local organizations, both LGBT and straight allies, to collaborate and develop efforts to advance the goals of Equality Florida and the LGBT movement.

Management: Manage, as needed, field organizers, temporary organizers, interns and volunteers and work with the Senior Political Director, Senior Policy Director and other Equality Florida directors to determine how best to meet Equality Florida’s strategic legislative, electoral, membership, communication, and education goals for the state.

Additional duties/responsibilities as assigned in accordance with anticipated growth and expansion of the Equality Florida field program.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher is preferred but exceptions will be considered for candidates with extensive campaign or field experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in electoral campaigns or directing field operations preferred.
  • Proficiency in voter engagement tools, like VAN, is preferred.
  • Coalition-building and management experience is preferred.
  • Candidates must be able to travel extensively.
  • Candidates must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Candidates must also have excellent speaking and writing skills, computer proficiency, and strong verbal communication skills
  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to advancing Equality Florida’s goals and objectives and to the organization.
  • Applicant must currently live in or be willing to relocate to Florida (Central Florida preferred).
  • Bilingual; Spanish preferred.
