University of West Florida Investigates Anti-LGBTQ+ Flyers

Last week, students and staff at the University of West Florida discovered a number of anti-LGBTQ+ flyers plastered across campus, most of them on the doors to lecture halls, reports Emma Kennedy in the Pensacola News Journal.

The flyers made disturbing and unsubstantiated claims about the LGBTQ+ community, and referred readers to a website claiming to be “the internet’s premium purity spiraling website.” Each flyer bore the slogan, “Stop the Fags.”

UWF spokeswoman Megan Gonzalez says she believes the flyers were put up by a national organization targeting campus, rather than by a group on campus. She says campus police are investigating the flyers, and that the university may press vandalism charges because of the damage to the buildings.

The university’s president, Martha Saunders, released a statement condemning the flyers and the intolerance they represent. Said Saunders, “We understand that the messages displayed may have generated concern and fear for some in our community. At the University of West Florida, we are committed to ensuring our institution is a safe and respectful environment for all. We do not tolerate acts of hate or prejudice targeting members of our community.”
